You Wouldn't Know... #WeAreTheThey | The Purple Pumpkin Blog

My 38th Birthday

I don’t write posts like this all that often, and for good reason. I can wind myself up so much that I will mentally cease to function properly, and my mental health is so important to me. And contrary to what you might see in the photos above, so is my physical health.

But here’s the thing. Looking at these photos…

You wouldn’t know that I am someone’s mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunty, friend.

You wouldn’t know that I have given birth to a wonderful son, or am married to amazing man.

You wouldn’t know that I have run my own business for the past 10 years.

You wouldn’t know that I’ve not long come home from an awesome holiday with my family.

You wouldn’t know what my inner voice is saying, or what thoughts are running through my mind.

You wouldn’t know that I could swim 64 lengths at my local swimming pool, in under an hour, 5 days a week.

You wouldn’t know that my blood pressure, blood sugars and cholesterol were all “normal”.

You wouldn’t know what I ate or drank that day, or on any day for that matter.

You wouldn’t know that there are days when I don’t want to step outside my front door for fear of being judged.

You wouldn’t know that I’ve spent all of my life hating myself.

You wouldn’t know that sometimes I’m okay with being fat.

You wouldn’t know that sometimes I’m not okay with being fat.

You wouldn’t know that I have spent a lifetime trying to lose weight. To somehow fit into society’s idea of “normal”. This photo demonstrates what a lifetime of dieting and body shaming looks like. It all didn’t work.

From looking at the photo

You would know that I’m fat.

For some reason, because of the size of my body, I am judged, made to feel worthless and should be ashamed of myself.

For some reason, society really has a problem with the way other people look, to the point of obsession.

But tell me, why should any of that matter to you?

Why does it matter to you what someone else’s health may or may not be like?

Why does it matter to you where other people buy their clothes, or what they choose to wear?

What is lacking in your life to judge me or anyone because of their body size?

This is my life, and I have the right to live it the way I am.

I joined in with a Twitter hashtag last night – #WeAreTheThey, started by a blogger called Debz. Head to her post and read why she started this hashtag.

It trended for most of the evening, and it was a night of empowerment for not only fat people, but for thin people or for ANYONE who has been body shamed.

You see, the thing is. Beneath it all, beneath the size of our bodies, we are all the same. We are all human beings, and THAT is what matters.
