UNO Cards - I seek stuff

Like many people, I had heard of the card game Uno, but didn’t really know anything about it or how it was played. This changed last summer, when we went on holiday as a family to Whitby. Six of us were staying in a self catering cottage, and my mother in law was singing the praises of this card game that she had been playing a couple of weeks earlier when she visited her sister, saying it would be the perfect game to play as a family indoorsif it was raining (which it was!).

She managed to pick one up from the local toy shop for £[], which seemed a bit of a steep price to pay for what was essentially a pack of cards! The game is made by Mattel, brand leaders in the games industry and is suitable for 2-10 players. The box states that it is for ages 7+, but I think most kids over 4 would manage the game relatively easily, as it is quite simple.

The game itself is very similar to a card game that we used to play with a regular deck of cards, in which someone puts a card down and the next player has to follow suit or number and if they can’t they have to pick up a card. The winner is the person to get rid of all of his/her cards first.

Uno have simplified the game further, replacing the traditional suits of cards with four bold colours: blue, green, yellow and red. Most of the cards have number values on them from 0 to 9. A set number of cards are dealt to each player, with the remainder forming a pickup pile on the table. The aim of the game is to play clockwise around the table, with each player placing a card that matches the number or colour of the previous card placed, with the object of losing all of his/her cards. To make the game more interesting, the makers of the game have added the following “action cards”:

Pick up 2-when this card is placed, the player who has the next turn must pick up two cards from the pickup pile.

Reverse play-If play is going clockwise around the table, the direction is changed to anticlockwise when this card is played.

Miss a go-Self explanatory!

Change colour-Whoever plays this card can name a new colour for the next person to match with their card. This is a good strategy card, and best kept for as long as possible as it can help you win a game and foil opponents!

Pickup 4 and change colour-Same as above, but the player that follows must also pick up four cards. Nasty!

There is another rule that must be obeyed in this game. When you are down to your last card, you must shout “Uno!”. If you fail to do this and someone notices, the person has to pick up two cards, although house rules can dictate much worse punishments!

A typical game of Uno lasts about 15 minutes, but this can vary greatly according to how many people are playing. It is a really good game for playing on holiday and can be easily packed in a bag or case. The fun of the game is that you can vary it and make up your own house rules if you don’t want to follow the original ones, which is what many people do when they play Monopoly. The game will appeal to young and old and has an appeal that spans generations.

This is a great game and a worth addition to our games collection. I would recommend it.
