Musical Theatre Royal Plymouth - The Good Review

Elf the Broadway Musicals - Theatre Royal Plymouth - The Good ReviewLength of show: 2 hours 20 minutes

Audience: Despite thinking it’s for the youngsters, it may be suitable for all ‘young at heart’!!

One of the most beloved Hollywood holiday hits of the past decade is now a full-grown Broadway musical!

This modern-day classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner Elf this Christmas!

Based on the beloved 2003 hit starring Will Ferrell, Elf is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole.

Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth.

With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.

The set was impressive, with quick changes (albeit with a few technical problems!) The visual impact was vibrant and bright with a special highlight at the end of the show which made it feel all the more magical…

The singing and dancing routines were of excellent quality, and those expecting to laugh as much as they did at the movie won’t be disappointed. What might come as a surprise is just how polished these songs and arrangements are, particularly the larger-than-life opening number at Santa’s workshop and several scenes in a very strong second act.

Ben Forster as ‘Buddie’ was a convincing ‘Elf’, charismatic, funny and a fantastic singing voice.

An excellent way to start feeling festive! Merry Christmas All!
