Gapers Block: Slowdown - December 14, 2014

Dose Market hosts its annual HoliDose holiday showcase today from 10am to 5pm at Venue One, 1034 W. Randolph St. Shop for fun gifts and tasty treats. Admission is $8 in advance, $10 at the door, and includes a drink ticket for those over 21. Kids and dogs(!) get in free.

The Chicago Art Girls host their third annual Holiday Pop-Up Shop Saturday and today from 11am to 5pm at Bell Elementary, 3730 N. Oakley Ave. Shop for fun gifts handmade by more than two dozen local artists and crafters.

Serving the Sentence returns to Towbar, 1500 W. Jarvis Ave., at 7pm. This month Sharon Ammen, Kristin Clifford, Kirk Kicklighter, Maggie Jenkins, Jeremy Schaefer and Michael Van Kerckhove will all start their stories with the sentence, "I felt like part of a freak show." Kendra Stevens hosts. No cover, but donations will be collected for East Village Youth Program.

Liar's Club, 1665 W. Fullerton Ave., hosts the 11th annual benefit toy drive for KT's Kids, with performances by Bailey Dee and the Late Night Bait, Angela Eve and Eve's Parlor and The Nefarious Fat Cats featuring Jake Burns from Stiff Little Fingers,

John and Joe Haggerty from Pegboy, Scott Lucas from Local H, Herb Rosen from The Beer Nuts and Mark DeRosa from Dummy -- plus pizza, dancing and prizes. Doors open tonight at 7pm. Donations of cash and/or new, unwrapped toys are accepted. 21+

The live lit series That's All She Wrote is back at Great Lakes Tattoo, 1148 W. Grand Ave. This month's lineup includes Bill Hillman, Dmitry Samarov, Wendy McClure, and Allison Kelley. Hosted by J.H. Palmer and Angela Benander. Doors open at 7:30, stories begin at 8pm. Free and BYOB.

The Bad Plus' avant garde form of jazz has touched upon many a cover song in their early work. Recently they have transitioned into completely original compositions and they are amazing. The Bad Plus will be performing in support of their new album Inevitable Western at City Winery, 1200 W Randolph St. Tickets for this all ages concert range from $30 to $40 and are avaiable for their 5pm show and the 8pm show. .

Martyrs', 3855 N. Lincoln Ave., hosts Burlesque-A-Pades: A Christmas Shimmy, tonight at 8pm. The show features Angie "The Italian Stallionette" Pontani, Albert Cadabra, Helen Pontani and the Maine Attraction. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. 21+
