Rare Set Of Two Vintage Wooden Boats Sailboat And Motorboat Circa 1920's
I am offering a set of our all time favorite toys. It was part of a cache of old mint toys from a shoe repair
shop in an old rivertown along the Allegheny River, upstream a few miles from Pittsburgh. Each year
at Christmas time they were unwrapped and displayed in his store window. After the holiday season they
were rewrapped and salted away until Christmas called again. I first became aware of his wonderful
Christmas displays in the late 1960's, on my way to and from work at Heinz. They were a local favorite
for many years. When the shop closed in the early 1970's I was fortunate enough to acquire a number of
toys from his memorable cache.
This fine set of American made wooden boats is from the 1920's. The motor boat has both its oars and
oarlock fittings. The waterline is trimed in orange with matching green and orange paddles. The motor
is mint with a light green housing. It runs as strong as it did when it left the factory. And a great plus...
it's interchangable with the sailboat. The sailboat itself has its original sail and keel, which has it's
original lock pin for use when the keel is lowered or raised. The keel is red and the sailboat green with
an orange waterline. All the paints are of high gloss and in exceptional condition.
The motorboat/rowboat measures 11 5/8 " long (w/o the motor) and 2 5/8 " wide. The sailboat is 22 " long
and 6 " wide. It stands 21 5/8 " tall. I have never lowered the keel. This matched set is a perfect example
of fine toymaking from back in the day. It is doubtful another set like this will appear on the horizon. A true
set of museum quality Americana. Anchors aweigh.
When they're gone...they're gone!
